The Dinner
It started out alright. The conversation was general, what the weather was like, how lovely the restaurant was, what type of flight they had that lasted until their dinner arrived. "So Matt. how long have you been dating my daughter?" Richard asked in a stern tone
"Nearly two years now" Matt replied
"And yet there is no ring on her finger" Richard replied
"DAD, don't start." Emily said
"We're just not ready for marriage" Matt replied
"I've heard that before. After all, Emily has been with a lot of men, were you aware of that?" Richard said cruelly
Poor Matt looked shocked that Mr. Lehman had basically called his daughter a whore. He was about to defend her when Emily jumped in "yeah, he is aware I have commitment issues, I wonder how I got those?" Emily asked sarcastically.
"You cannot possibly blame your mother and me for any issues you might have." Richard responded.
"Yeah I can since it sterns from my childhood. Since I was old enough to crawl you pushed the idea of marriage on me, now the concept seems like a prison to me." Emily replied
"You had a lovely childhood, we raise you as best we could" Richard said
"You and I must have a different definition of the word lovely and you didn't raise us. The nannies and maids did." Emily said
"Enough" Katherine said "We are going to have a nice family dinner."
"Fine." Emily and Richard replied in agreement
"So how did you and Matt meet?" Katherine asked politely
"We work together" Emily answered
"Oh so you both work in the CNU part of the FBI" Katherine replied
"I'm sorry, come again?" Emily said shocked that her mother actually knew what unit she worked at.
"You work in the Crisis Negotiation Unit right, you handle hostage situations." Katherine said
"Among other things. I've been in the FBI for nearly ten years now; you've never known what branch I worked at." Emily said
"Of course I know this stuff, I'm your mother" Katherine replied "so you and Matt work in the same unit"
"Yeah we're partners" Emily replied
"Really and your boss is Ok with that?" Katherine asked
"We're a good term" Matt answered
"Jennifer, I heard you made detective last year, I'm impress" Katherine said
"Who are you and where is my real mother?" Jenny asked
"I'm trying here" Katherine said "Emily, I saw that awhile back you visited Allison, are you still in contact with her?"
Emily couldn't believe her ears; her mother actually admitted that Ally existed. "We've been writing letters, we're trying to work on our relationship, one step at a time" Emily answered
"Do you think she would see us if we were to visit her?" Katherine asked
"Honestly I doubt it but you could try, you should try" Emily said
"The media picked up that story in New York, Don't you think we've been embarrass enough by you girls, you have to keep dragging the Lehman name though the mud. Everyone now knows that Allison is in jail" Richard said
"Yes dad that was my plan, it was just some big conspiracy, to have a child kidnapped, my career put in jeopardy, all so we could take a dig at you and mom." Emily said sarcastically.
"Oh and the sex tape was just classy" Richard said
"With all due respect sir, we were the victims there, we had no idea we were being video taped, and Emily is not that type of girl" Matt said
"Regardless, my associates saw that tape." Richard said
"Oh you mean the pervs you work with, I guess they didn't have to go buy porn that night." Emily replied
"Emily Elizabeth" Richard started to say but was interrupted by Katherine "Stop it, I want a nice dinner"
"So Emily and Jennifer, how are you two doing finically? After all cops don't make a lot of money and Emily you brought home another cop, seriously, you couldn't hook up with a lawyer" Richard said
"Go to hell" Emily said "I'm sorry mom; it seems you're trying but I think it's time for Matt and me to leave. I can't wait for Lia to call. You see dad, I was going to have my friend call pretending to be my boss with a situation so I would have to leave. It's pretty bad when your own daughter has to have an escape plan before having dinner with you. Let's go Matt"
"Wait, you can't leave" Katherine said
"Why not?" Emily asked
"Because I have cancer" Katherine blurted out.
