Chapter Ten:
Dealt with It
Emily
entered the hotel room, her father followed her in. She scanned the room
looking for her mother, she still had no idea what she was going to say to her,
Emily figured she'd just wing it. "Where's mom?" Emily asked her father, who
still looked shocked over the fact that Emily was actually standing there.
"Bathroom" he replied "why are you here?" Richard asked again
"I
told you I'm here to deal with this" She said
"Don't" Richard replied
"What?" Emily asked confused
"Turn around and walk away, we both can pretend you never came here today"
Richard said
"I
don't understand, I want to talk to mom about this. She wants me in her life I
know that from last night" Emily said shocked and a little hurt by her father's
remarks
"Yes, your mother wants contact with all of you girls, she wants to make amends
before she dies, and I'm humoring her because it is her dying wish that we be
one big happy family. But I don't want any of it, the three of you are
ungrateful spoiled bitches who I don't want anything to do with, I'm so tired of
having one of you dishonor the Lehman name. So just leave" he said
Emily never got a chance to react to what her father had said to her because her
mother walked out of the bathroom. "Emily, what are you doing here?" Katherine
asked.
Emily
refused to look at her father, "I'm here because you are my mother and you are
dying and I'm obligated to be here" Emily said
"What does that mean?" Katherine asked
"It
means I'll be here for you next week, next month, next year, or however long you
need me to be here," Emily stated "Don't take this the wrong way" She said as
she caught the smile come across her mother's face "I don't forgive you for
everything that happened in the past and I never will. I can't give you the
forgiveness you need just because you're sick, not going to happen. But I will
not turn my back on you when you need me the most, that's your territory." Emily
said
"Oh
Emily" her mother said as she started to sob and gave Emily a hug "I don't
expect either of you ever to forgive us, I'm just happy you're willing to let me
in your life again"
Emily found this show of affection especially odd, she couldn't think of one
single memory from childhood in which either of her parents had shown such
public affection or emotion. "It's Ok mom" she said patting her mother on the
back "Please don't go visit Ally, let me handle that" Emily requested, her
mother nodded her head in agreement, Katherine knew that it was a better idea
for Emily to talk to Allison.
"But
I want nothing to do with him" Emily stated as she pointed to her father
"But" Katherine started but Emily didn't let her finish "I'll be polite to him
as long as you're around, but after that I want nothing to do with him" She said
as tears began to form in her eyes but she tried to hold them back, the words
her father had said to her earlier finally having time to register.
"GOOD" Richard yelled "Because I certainly don't want anything to do with you"
Katherine was stunned at her husband's comment, Emily however was not "Just for
the record, it is you that has dishonor the Leman name, I hope you rot in hell"
Emily said as the tears began to roll down her cheeks, Emily knew she was about
to lose it and she needed to get out of there so she said "Call me later mom"
and with that Emily left the hotel room, walked down to the main lobby trying to
keep herself composed enough to reach her car, once inside she just let the
tears flow. She cried for her childhood, for the knowledge that she would soon
be losing her mother, but mostly she cried because she already had lost her
father. She must have been there for a good ten minutes, when she took her cell
phone out of her purse and hit speed dial one. "Flannery" Matt said into the
phone
"Can
you come get me?" Emily asked sobbing into the phone "I don't think I can drive"
"Why
what happen?" Matt asked
"I dealt with it" Emily simply answered
