Chapter Two:
Long Night
Emily looked over at the
clock resting on the nightstand for what seemed like the nineteenth time, it
read 4:09am. She should be asleep, she had an early meaning with IA, but since
her dream earlier that night she just could not get back to sleep. It was
something that had become a routine in the past few months because every time
she closed her eyes, she would picture Marshall. Matt shifted his body in his
sleep and accidentally brushed his arm against Emily’s back. Logically, she knew
it was Matt’s touch but that simple touch took her back to the farmhouse. She
felt Marshall’s touch on every inch of her skin, she felt his hot breath on the
back of her neck. That did it, she felt her stomach turn, she got out of the bed
and headed towards the bathroom. She knelt down to lean over the toilet as she
became physically ill. Afterwards, she rinsed her mouth out in the sink and
splashed cold water in her face. Emily looked in the mirror at herself. As the
tears started to roll down her cheek she wondered if she would ever feel normal
again? Emily splashed her face with cold water again, she started to head back
to bed but as she walked across the living room she got a better idea, she
grabbed a blanket from the couch, opened the balcony doors and walked out on to
the balcony. She took a deep breath of fresh air as she settled down on a chair.
Matt pulled the blankets up around his chin, he was so comfortable, he never
wanted to move from this particular spot. But the alarm going off was ruining
his peacefulness. He rolled over to turned off the alarm, that's when he noticed
that the other side of the bed was empty. Where the hell was Emily? Matt jumped
out off bed and headed for the living room, he looked on the couch, no Emily. So
he made a beeline for the guest room assuming that she hadn’t been as
comfortable with him being next to her as she had claimed but she wasn’t there
either. Where the hell could she be? Bathroom, maybe she got up early to shower
and stuff so Matt quickly ran to the bathroom but the door was open and he
already knew she wasn’t in there but he looked anyhow. Nope again no Emily. “Ok”
Matt thought to himself “she has to be here somewhere, let’s not panic” But
where? He walked back into the living room while trying to think of where Emily
could be or what happened to make her disappear. Then he remembered that Emily
had a meeting with IA this morning so he headed to the balcony to see if he
could see her car. Maybe she left early. That’s when he saw her, curled up in a
patio chair, he looked at her, she looked so peaceful and he hated that he had
to wake her but she had an IA meeting at 9. He gently placed his hand on her
shoulder and calmly said her name “Emily”
Emily felt someone touch her and a male voice call her name,
she awoke with such a jerk that she almost tipped the chair over. “Matt what the
hell? You nearly scared me to death” Emily said in an annoyed tone. She took a
deep breath and hoped that Matt didn’t notice that her entire body was shaking
from the fright she got from him waking her.
“I nearly scared you to death. How about you almost scared me
to death. When I woke up and you weren’t lying next to me, I was worried” Matt
said moving towards her, he didn’t want to push his limit, he wasn’t going for a
kiss or anything, he just wanted to give her a hug and maybe make both of them
feel better. But Emily turned away from him and walked back into the house
without another word.
