Chapter Two:
It's Complicated
"I don't understand how this turned into an argument, you told me to answer the phone" Matt called to Emily. It was the next morning and both were rushing around the house trying to get ready for work and have a conversation at the same time.
"Because now we have to have dinner with my parents next week when they come to LA" Emily yelled across the house, she finished straightening her hair and putting her make up on and headed from the bathroom to the bedroom.
"You make it sound like its some form of torture. It is just dinner with your parents plus we have been going out for two years most normal people would have already met their significant other's family by now. “Matt said as Emily walked into the room.
"It is a form of torture and we're not normal" Emily said as she finished getting dress
"Oh I see what this is about, you don't want your parents to meet me" Matt said placing his gun, cell and badge on his belt.
"Crap look at the time. I have to go, the DA wants to run through my statement again before I take the stand" Emily said, she walked over to Matt, wrapped her arms around his neck and gave him a passionate kiss "and that's not it at all, we're talk about this later, Ok?" Emily said, she grabbed her keys, cell, gun, and badge and headed out of the house before she was late.
An hour later, Matt was at work. He had headed downstairs to the shooting range with Frank at the moment he arrive at the office.
"So Emily doesn't want her parents to meet you?" Frank asked, bang, bang.
"She swears that's not it. But she was really freaked out this morning" Matt replied pulling the trigger.
"What do you know about them?" Frank asked
"Not much, we have been partners for two and a half years and dating for close to two years, and I think we had two conversations in which her parents came up. The only thing she has ever told me about her family was that she has a younger sister, Jennifer, she's a detective in San Francisco, I think. That's all she has told me, I mean Emily didn't even tell me about Allison I found out about that by pure accident." Matt ranted "that's weird, right?"
"To be honest, I'm the wrong person to ask bro. My longest relationship lasted four months." Frank replied.
"Right and Frank, we didn't have this conversation. Emily gets touchy about our personal lives being around the office." Matt said
"Sure thing" Frank replied. As the two guys went back to shooting at the targets.
It was around 11:30 when Emily got back to the office from court. She walked down the hall towards her desk, she expected Matt to be sitting there but he was nowhere in sight. She sat down anyhow; she took another look around to see if she could spot him. "He's downstairs at the shooting range with Frank" Special agent Lucy Miller, a fellow negotiator and a close friend of Emily's said.
"Who?" Emily questioned pretending to have no idea what Lucy was talking about.
"Flannery. And you can cut the innocent act I saw you scanning the room for him" Lucy replied. Just than another one of Emily's co-workers and friends Lia Mathers, came up and sat down in Matt's chair.
"So how was court?" Lia asked
"Lawyers give me a headache" Emily replied "But judge Williams ruled in our favor. Joseph Turner is fit to stand trial."
"Enough shop talk" Lucy said "why is Matt hiding from you?"
"Matt's hiding from you?" Lia questioned
Emily rolled her eyes. "I have no idea what you are talking about" she said.
"Yes you do. You two are so predictable. Whenever you have a disagreement, he runs and hides downstairs." Lucy replied
"He could just be practicing ever think of that" Emily replied
"True. Except when you came in you were looking for him and you look guilty." Lucy reasoned
"So what are you two fighting about?" Lia asked
"You know why we are such good friends, it is because of your understanding for privacy" Emily said as she logged into her computer, she hoped by looking busy Lucy and Lia would moved on.
"When have we ever understood the concept of privacy?" Lia asked
"Well, we can have this conversation now or we can have it tonight at Sloans in front of Matt, Frank, Duff and the rest of the unit. Your choice." Lucy said
"Lu!" Emily whined
"Em!" Lucy replied "I'm serious"
"Arg" Emily sighed. She forgot that Lucy was as good at negotiating as she was. "Fine, I surrender. My parents are coming to town" Emily replied
"OK and" Lia said
"I think I may have given Matt the impression I didn't want my parents to meet him." Emily said
"Wait, you have been going out forever, you two lived together and Matt has never meet your parents" Lucy said
"No, he hasn't" Emily replied
"Why don't you want your parents to meet him?" Lia asked
"That's just it. It's not I don't want my parents to meet Matt; I don't want Matt to meet my parents. Lets just say my parents and I don't have the greatest relationship." Emily said "why am I explaining this to you two? I need to go find Matt. And Lu and Lia this was a private conversation" Emily said. She had to make herself clear on that part, she loved Lucy and Lia but they both loved to gossip. Emily got up and headed downstairs to find Matt.
Frank and Matt had finished with target practice and were putting away the equipment when Emily found them. "Hey guys." Emily said casually
"How was court?" Frank asked feeling the awkwardness that was between Matt and Emily.
"Good. Judge Williams ruled in our favor, Turner is fit to stand trial." Emily replied.
"That's great news." Frank said "I think I'm going to head up stairs. I have a few incident reports to complete. Later" Frank said leaving to give the couple some privacy.
"You want to talk about it now or when we get home?" Emily asked
"What?" Matt asked playing dumb
"Look Matt it's not I don't want my parents to meet you, I don't want you to meet my parents. My parents and I don't have the greatest relationship. I haven't seen them in over five years and we only talk on holidays and birthdays and that's more of an obligation call than anything else. I have been dodging my mother's calls for a week now; Jenny warned me that they were coming to town. I was upset this morning because I have to have dinner with them. Matt, I swear it has nothing to do with you. It's complicated alright?" Emily ranted
"Alright" Matt said. He differently could understand where she was coming from. "Let's go get some work done."
"Sounds good" Emily replied as they headed back upstairs so they could actually do some work.
